ABOUT
This is a blog dedicated to inspiration, design mishaps and hopefully a few successes. So here you are, the good, the bad and the cringing all laid bare in my own little digital sketchbook. Thanks for viewing! K.

Final versions of the posters.

Didn’t end up using any of these, the typography and the message were not working with the portrait, and I felt like the balance was a little bit off. However, out of the three, I definitely prefer the first version.

Using the images from my photoshoot, I started working on a series of posters.  These quotes all roughly come from interviews that I’ve been getting from people regarding their experiences with ageism. Although not all are exactly direct quotes, I tried to stick to the stories that I was told by using a single phrase to characterise the portrait and poster.

Another small experimentation, an idea that I let go of quite quickly. The concept behind it came from the stamp ‘expired’ that get used on various documents or products.

Samples from my experiments with phrases.  In the end none of these were used but it was interesting experimenting with text and layout within a poster space.

Another interesting article regarding why the stereotypes of ageing exist in the first place.

“The perception of our aged citizens as being frail, confused and thus incompetent reinforces a pervasive ageism within our society”

“Similarly, most younger people have little daily contact with people over 65, apart from infrequent contact with their grandparents. As such, their perceptions of older people, ageing and dementia are likely to be drawn from portrayals in the mainstream media.”

I suppose it makes sense that our lack of participation in the lives of seniors, combined with avid attention to many different types of media would create this unbalanced opinion.

Does this apply to most people then?  And if so, to what extent. It is starting to seem like the protest brief will be about fighting the stereotypes of ageing not just within the workplace, but in daily life and behaviour as well.

Perhaps its the colour combination or the fact that the visuals used are vector-based. Nevertheless it is really interesting to see another designer’s interpretation of an ageism campaign… even though it’s not a protest.

Over 50 And Out of Work is a multimedia project that focuses on telling the stories of people over 50 who either have trouble finding employment or have been released due to age discrimination.

Many of these stories are quite touching, giving greater insight into why this problem keeps occurring. I find myself agreeing with the article “The Age Old Problem…” that I blogged about earlier. Originally, I had considered that some industries are perhaps worse than others. However, this issue seems to stem from a whole social stigma.

Although I planned on targeting a specific industry or company, I’m going to have to go against my better judgement and address this protest to the whole of the western world.

Original experimentation samples. Although I am not entirely fond of the design, the point was to create a few catchy phrases that I could then use somewhere in the protest.

In developing a protest against age discrimination, I conducted a small photoshoot.  These are the black and white versions of some of the shots. As of this point, I not sure if I will use these portraits in this exact size/layout.

Aside from the photographs, I managed to collect many different stories from people sharing their experience of being made redundant in their job.  Some were asked to leave while others experienced increased levels of discomfort in the workplace as the management worsened working conditions in an effort get people to quit.

A rather interesting article that highlights why ageism still exists today. The author argues that laws, regulations and healthcare standards serve only as a bandaid to a larger problem - that we as a society are obsessed with youth.  This not only creates an imbalance, it encourages everyone to view any signs and symptoms of age as something that needs to be avoided.

Both physical appearance and mental capacity are explored - depicting how we have begun to shun and fear the concept of ageing, as well the people that do.

Really stunning work, and a nice example of a typographic system working across two languages.  The illustrations and type work well together in creating a rustic, authentic mood.
